Lesson 4: The Stroma

Contained within the inner membrane of the chloroplast and surrounding the thylakoids is a gel-like substance called the stroma.

  • The stroma refers to the colourless fluid surrounding the grana inside the chloroplast.
  • Within the stroma are the grana, which contains the the thylakoid.

The stroma contains enzymes, sugars and organic acids.

  • The stroma gel contains enzymes, sugars and organic acids.
  • Carbohydrates that are produced by photosynthesis are not used straight away.
  • They are stored as starch in the stroma
