Electrons lose energy as the move down the electron transport chain

  1. The electrons lose energy as they move down the electron transport chain
    • This is used to transport protons into the thylakoid to ensure there is a higher concentration of protons, compared to the stroma.
  2. Protons move down the concentration gradient via ATP synthase embedded in the thylakoid membrane.
  3. This combines ADP and Pi to form ATP
    • This is called phosphorylation.
