There are two stages within required practical 3: making serial dilutions and measuring the change in mass.
Making serial dilutions:
A serial dilution is a set of solutions which decrease in concentration by the same factor each time.
- Place 5 test tubes in a test tube rack
- Add 10cm^3 of 2M sucrose solution to one of the test tubes and add 5cm^3 of distilled water to the other test tubes.
- Use a pipette to measure 5cm^3 of solution from the first test tube and add it to the distilled water in the second test tube, then mix the solution thoroughly - this will create 1M sucrose solution
- Repeat this process to create 0.5M, 0.25M and 0.125M solutions
