Lesson 1: Spirometry

Peak expiratory flow (PEF) and spirometry are the two most commonly used lung function tests in the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory conditions.

  • Both tests measure the speed and efficiency with which air moves in and out of the lungs.
  • Spirometry is the most common test, it measures lung function (specifically the amount of air that can be inhaled or exhaled).

Spirometry is helpful in assessing breathing patterns that identify conditions such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis and COPD.
