What is a microscope?
At GCSE level, you will have learned what a microscope is. In short, it is a scientific instrument used to observe small objects, like cells. The image of the object is magnified so it is able to be seen by the naked eye. There are a few different types of microscope, some of which you'll have to learn about.
The ones you've likely used before are optical microscopes. These bend light towards the eye, making the object appear larger than it actually is, magnifying it through at least one lens.
The two types of microscope you have to learn about are:
- Optical microscopes
- Electron microscopes
But let's see what you already know!
