Command words are the parts of a question that explain how to answer it. You will find answering all exam questions much (much) easier if you understand what these command words do. So, we've compiled a table below of all of them and an explanation of what you need to do to answer the question.

| Give/Name/State | Give a one or word answer, or a short sentence. Don't write more than this. |
| Describe | Simply put, you need to explain what something is like. |
| Explain | Give a reason for something |
| Suggest | Use your scientific knowledge to present a case of what the answer might be. |
| Compare | Write what is similar and what is different between two things. |
| Contrast | It's similar to compare, but don't write what is similar. Explain only the differences between two things. |
| Calculate | Use your mathematical skills to work out a problem. |
| Evaluate | Give arguments for and against an issue, or explain the advantages and disadvantages of something. You need to write a conclusion as well. |
When you're reading exam questions, it's a good idea to underline or highlight the command words. Remember though, you're not allowed to use a highlighter in your answer.
Also, when you're answering compare, contrast or evaluate questions, it might be a good idea to make a list (written or mental) of the similarities and differences, or the pros and cons before you go on to answer the question. This will help you understand what you need to write before you start writing.
