Antigens are also important in medicine, especially in:
- organ donors
- blood transfusions.
Unless the donor is genetically identical to the patients, cells will have foreign antigens. This can stimulate an immune response.
- Can cause an organ to be rejected.
- Rejection can be prevented through taking immunosuppresants.
