In mitosis, chromosomes go through prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase after interphase. Interphase is separate and isn't part of mitosis.
Prophase
During prophase...
- The chromosomes condense - meaning that they become shorter and fatter.
- Centrioles start to move to opposite ends of the cells, this forms protein fibres called spindles.
- Finally, the nuclear envelope breaks down - allowing the chromosomes to be let out into the cytoplasm.
