Lesson 6: Birds - Exchange Systems (Optional)

Birds must be capable of high rates of gas exchange.

  • This is because their oxygen consumption at rest is higher than other vertebrates.
  • The oxygen consumption of birds increases by many times during flight.

The gas volume of a birds lung is smaller, but it is connected to air sacs by a series of small tubes, making the total volume of the respiratory system about 2x the size on average.
