Lesson 6: Reducing Sugar Food Tests 2

Benedicts Solution

Benedict's solution can be used to test for the presence of reducing and non-reducing sugars. It is a clear blue liquid that changes colour and gives a different coloured precipitate depending on how much sugar is present.

How to perform a Benedict's test

How to test for reducing sugars

  1. Place a small amount of a food sample in a test tube.
  2. Add an equal volume of Benedict's solution and mix.
  3. Heat sample with Benedict's reagent at 95°C for a few minutes.

Benedicts Test Results

If a high amount of a reducing sugar is present, you'll see a brick red precipitate. If no reducing sugar is present, it'll stay at blue.
