Lesson 9: Cyclic and Non-Cyclic Photophosphorylation

We've already explored what phosphorylation means. In the process of photosynthesis, the phosphorylation of ADP to form ATP using the energy of the sunlight is called photophosphorylation. What is cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation? 

Cyclic photophosphorylation

This is where the electrons do not produce reduced NADP, instead they only produce ATP. The electrons are expelled by photosystem I and they return to the system.

Non-cyclic photophosphorylation

This is where electrons move down the electron transport chain, the electrons are transferred to NADP with a proton from the stroma to produce reduced NADP.
